FREE Online Chemistry Tutor for Students Who Are Blind and Visually Impaired
Jan 20th, 2010 by admin

Through a wonderful connection from the CANnect consortium WSSB received
a call from Quantum Simulations with an offer we couldn’t refuse – free
access to students who are blind and visually impaired.  Here is what
they have to say about themselves if you went to their website
www.quantumsimulations.com:

“Quantum develops artificial intelligence (AI) tutoring, assessment and
professional development software for chemistry, mathematics and
accounting that empowers educators and inspires students to achieve
more. Accessed over the Internet, our software is scientifically proven
to increase test scores by as much as 50%, significantly improving
student comprehension and problem-solving skills.”

The first product for blind students is Chemistry Tutor, math and
additional science programs will be following. Quantum realizes that
STEM curriculum is crucial for our students who are often left out for
many, many reasons. Quantums’ AI tutoring software addresses the equity
challenge directly by providing blind students with effective one-on-one
tutoring help. Certified by the NFB, Quantum is the first to deliver
accessible artificial intelligence tutoring software for the blind and
visually impaired.

Accessed over the Internet 24/7, both struggling and advanced students
can enter any problem into the Chemistry Tutor and receive personal,
effective tutoring assistance based on their own work, subject knowledge
and learning style. The tutor can give detailed explanations for each
step in a student’s problem, give students personal feedback on their
own work, and let students ask questions about the concepts and skills
they are trying to learn.

The “Enter Any Problem” feature of the AI software enables the tutor to
be compatible with any curriculum and requires no change in existing
lesson plans, textbooks or homework assignments used by teachers. The
simple, intuitive interface allows students to jump right into the
software and begin using the Tutors with no prior training. Students
have a username and password that travels with them so they can receive
tutoring from any computer connected to the Internet.

Quantum has intentionally kept their technology uncomplicated and easy
to use while being instructionally sound.  Washington State School for
the Blind has been selected to act as the registrar for this wonderful
product. If you know of a student that could benefit from that little
bit of extra help in Chemistry, if you  would like to see how this
program works please contact Sherry Hahn, Digital Learning Coordinator,
Washington State School for the Blind, 360-696-6321, ext 133 or by
e-mail at sherry.hahn@wssb.wa.gov

At this offer only applies to blind and visually impaired students and
at this time only the Chemistry Tutor is available.
