11-08-2010: SENADIS: SENADIS inicia proceso de elaboración del Plan Nacional de Acción en Discapacidad
“El Plan de Acción para la Inclusión Social de las Personas con Discapacidad deberá constituirse en una herramienta de gestión para la institucionalidad pública involucrada -directa e indirectamente- en la oferta para las personas con discapacidad”, señaló la Directora Nacional del SENADIS, María Ximena Rivas.

Abril 2008 Rostros Nuevos: Propuestas para la integración social de las personas con discapacidad mental en situación de pobreza
Nos hemos convencido de que sólo una vez que Chile enfrente con voluntad y seriedad los desafíos que nos plantean las actuales condiciones de vida de las personas con discapacidad mental en situación de pobreza, se dedicarán esfuerzos y recursos para contar con información y análisis que sean base sólida de formulación de políticas y acciones permanentes en torno a este profundo problema social.

Thank you Carlos and welcome to this website. I have contacted you directly regarding your question. A quick answer to your question here is yes and no.
Of course in the USA there are many outstanding resources and I do have direct connections with individuals and agencies who are doing excellent work in the field of supported employment. Employment opportunities and success varies for individuals with disabilities, with those who need a greater degree of support often left without employment. The Americans with Disabilities Act has been very instrumental in this regard. Yet there is tremendous room for improvement.
Here in Chile this remains a challenge and is not a commonly accepted concept. There are tiny pockets of change stirring about. For individuals with more significant disabilities the prospect of employment remains slim.
There is a mounting energy however, especially given Chile has not only signed, but also ratified the UN Convention on Rights for Persons with Disabilities. The office of SENADIS is working on interpreting their relatively new ADA equivalent, Ley 20.422. There is also a burgeoning collaborative of DSOs that have come together to create “Movimiento D” (Disability Movement) of which I am involved. We are many comprised of individuals with physical, sensory and mental health disabilities, I represent the individuals with intellectual disabilities. Our organization recently met with the Vice President of the Chilean Congress to inform the senator of the issues Chileans with disabilities continue to face. At the same time a few small foundations that support individuals with intellectual disabilities have also gathered together and are currently working towards becoming a formalized coalition in the Santiago region, RedVIIC- Red Chilena de Vida Independiente e Inserción en la Comunidad. I am also a leading member of this organization.
Pursuing info on Chile re inclusion & diversity, I found your site, Dr. Martinez, and feel grateful for the website re Chilean legislation re “discapacidad.” Is there anywhere I can find results?
